Life Coaching FAQs
What is Life and Career Coaching about, in one sentence?
Coaching helps you create a successful, fulfilling life and career: improving your relationships, finding balance, pursuing your passions, achieving your goals, and reaching your potential.
Where does coaching happen?
If you live in the Boston area, you can come to my office in Medford, MA. But location is not a limitation – I coach people from all over the world by videoconference and phone. In fact, it’s easier to dig in when you can kick your feet up and be coached from the comfort of your own home or office!
What can coaching help me with?
Creating more happiness. More balance. Better relationships. A lifestyle that you love. A career you love. Personal success. Professional success. You name it.
But it’s about more than just visible change. I help you become a more effective, fulfilled, and deeper thinking person. I help you have a better relationship with yourself.
Life coaching helps you feel calmer, clearer, and more confident in yourself and your choices. These are qualities that you carry with you all day long, everywhere you go.
In life coaching, you take action. You can stop being a person living on the sidelines, letting your life pass you by. You get out there and live life fully.
Is coaching just like therapy?
Absolutely not. Therapy is about treating mental illness, working through deeply rooted psychological issues, and resolving past traumas. Therapy is great for people with psychological problems that require intervention with a mental health specialist.
On the other hand, life coaching is an empowering process for normal, healthy people to get help making their lives better, happier, and more fulfilled. Think about it – just because you’re facing a problem, are out of balance, feel a little lost, or need help creating a better life, that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you! You already have everything it takes to transform your life, and coaching helps you do it by leveraging you strengths and ingenuity.
So what is the life coaching experience like?
There’s so much to say about the coaching experience, so I broke it down into categories.
A COMFORTABLE, ENJOYABLE PROCESS
Sometimes making change can be a little scary, but coaching is actually fun and empowering.
Expect to laugh a lot in coaching! It feels great to get things out in the open – so you can get clarity and take action. Clients often tell me that just by talking to me, they feel better.
As a coach, I will never say the words “there’s something wrong with you.” We’ll probably discover some things that aren’t working for you, but it’s never because you’re not good enough. It’s my job to highlight your strengths, so that you can make any necessary changes with confidence.
AWARENESS AND HONESTY WITH YOURSELF
Coaching helps you be truthful with yourself. We discuss your hopes and goals, often discovering aspirations that you’ve long since given up. We also help you get clear on your purpose – making sure your choices are aligned with your priorities. We explore your strengths, passions, and motivators. It’s about deciding what you want, which makes it easier for us to find opportunities that will honestly make you happier.
We also explore areas where you may not be fully truthful with yourself.
What personal blocks are holding you back? What habits and patterns are getting in your way? Are you giving yourself the balance you need? Are your choices making you happy? Are you giving your relationships the time and thoughtfulness they deserve?
As you build awareness, you create opportunities.
GOALS, ACTION, AND CHANGE
At the end of the day, coaching is all about making things happen. I help you stop procrastinating on important goals. I help you turn your aspirations into reality – by taking action.
Structure is a big part of it. I help you break your goals down into small, achievable chunks. As we develop strategies to achieve your goals, we’ll discuss possible obstacles to keep it realistic. Then we discuss how to access your strengths, resources, and relationships to help you overcome those barriers.
I also provide expert help getting it all organized and managing your time as you progress.
That doesn’t mean you will be overly structured. Everyone needs to have downtime to relax, have fun, and get those creative juices flowing. So don’t worry, your structure will be balanced.
ACCOUNTABILITY
It’s always easier to achieve a goal when you have someone waiting to find out how it went. But I take accountability to a higher place.
I help you stop being accountable to the insignificant things and start being accountable to the things you really value.
Often it’s about standing up to the pressure to put yourself last. Or the pressure to keep up with the Joneses. Or whatever pressure is keeping you away from what you really need.
And then we add in celebration! Sometimes personal progress happens in huge spurts and sometimes in baby steps that no one else would recognize as important. But I get it.
Now occasionally you don’t achieve your weekly goals. This is where you’d lose faith in yourself if you were going it on your own. But these moments are not failures – they’re learning opportunities.
Believe me, no one is lazy. There’s always a reason why things didn’t work out, so we figure it out. What got in the way? What new strategies can you use? What can you learn from this? Was this “failure” actually a success, just a different success than you expected?
It all gets back to empowerment. So on to empowerment…
EMPOWERMENT
Life coaching is about your empowerment - you get into a place of power in your own life. Absolutely, come to me and vent. Everybody needs a cheerleader sometimes. But then I help you look at your situation and decide where you can take responsibility and act.
Coaching is a self-directed learning process. You decide what you want to work on, how far you want to dig, and what you want to accomplish. In fact, coaching is based on the belief that you are already complete, competent, and creative. In coaching I help you find the right answers – your answers.
Coaching also helps you develop self-management skills. I help you learn to stay on track, stay calm, stay organized, and stay accountable. That includes giving yourself credit where credit’s due and celebrating your success.
BEING ENOUGH, HAVING ENOUGH
But life coaching isn’t all about taking action and making changes.
Sometimes coaching helps you discover that you’re already good enough. Sometimes the only change you make is learning to recognize your strengths and gifts.
And other times coaching is learning to find happiness in the life and career you already have. We might work on being more mindful, more present, and more available for your relationships. We might help you be more aware of the good in your life by developing a gratitude practice. And I have a lot more tricks up my sleeve to help you appreciate life as it is.
RESPECT & TRUST
In life coaching, you can trust me to respect you 100%. And I help you respect yourself.
Life can be invalidating. People dismiss your hopes. People tell you shouldn’t feel how you do. They tell you not to worry about things that are a big deal to you. It can make you stop trusting your judgment and intuition.
Not me. In coaching, if you say it’s important, then it’s important. I listen and we face it together. I help you trust yourself to the core.
Really, it’s about confidence. By helping you clarify your purpose, your priorities, and the path toward success, you build your confidence.
